They said there was no chance of evil
To touch those walking in the light -
And they backed it up with Bible verses.
They said love, love, love
Was what we needed for the ravening wolves
Assaulting the flocks all around.
They said power, power, power
Throwing of power in every direction
Was the way to soundness of mind.
And yes they quoted the same verses
That really would have disproved them
If we had dared take those verses in context.
They said declaring victory
And focusing on our status as Christians
Was what would make us strong.
Yes they had pages of verses
To be quoted and memorized -
And yes, I did it all.
They said when God's Spirit was present
There was no room for any devils,
Even the ones welcomed at the door -
Even the ones that took over churches
With strange shrieks and gyrations -
'Ignore them, for they have no power.'
For years a wild lightning power
Posed as the Holy Spirit
And made wreckage in its path.
The Holy Spirit was still working,
But He was quieter and gentler
And didn't ravage with His fire.
They said we should submit to man,
Learn the right affirmations,
Ignore the devil and he would flee from us.
As bit by bit it came unglued,
I fled from their entrapments
And was condemned at every step.
Still they believe they are in safety,
But they cannot see the cords around them
Closing in tighter and tighter every day.
A few days ago, one died -
I saw her falling and my spirit cried,
But I think God saved her at the last.
I cannot deny the real Holy Spirit
Who led me out by discernment and warnings
And kept me in God's truth;
I cannot deny the real God the Father
Who held onto me through demonic horrors
And holds me through this phase of agony;
And though the enemy still opposes
Every step towards freedom,
I know I belong to the real Lord Jesus Christ.
Without the Bible and the Holy Spirit,
We are lost in the tangles and convolutions
Of modern spirituality and worldliness.
There is a type of presumption
That flourishes when people are too sure
And lulls them into embracing the unthinkable.
Oh Lord deliver us from presumption
And forgive us for ever believing
That we could be safe with compromise!
